All in the Details!

With every fresh fashion season, skirt hem lines are apt to rise and fall, and pant legs can shift from super-skinny to sailor width. These nuances in the silhouette are just as important as the next “it” bag, and The Tailor Maid is here to make sure that whatever this season’s style may bring, it looks right on YOU!

We’ve been seeing some longer skirts this fall, and we’re personally loving the nostalgic feeling of the classic knee length look. One thing to be sure of when choosing and/or hemming your skirts is to make sure that just the right amount of leg is featured. If your skirt is too long and hits in the middle of your calf, you can end up looking stumpy and unpolished, or if your skirt is too short, your outfit can loose it’s chicness.  The exact length of a skirt MATTERS!

Wide legged jeans are also quite popular this season, and this style of pant can be the statement piece of a chic and powerful outfit, no doubt about it! Fit is SO important when it comes to wide legged pants–with so much extra volume in the legs, the fit of your seat is going to be even more crucial, along with the length of your pant hem. Making sure that the seat is snug (but not too snug!) will save you from looking like your pants are two sizes too big, and a proper hem length will save the day–a tad too short with those wide legs and you’re in trouble!

So stop by The Tailor Maid and we’ll help you pull off this season’s looks with ease! The details in how your clothing fits your body are so important, and is what truly makes your wardrobe YOURS. Come in today and let us work our magic!

See you soon!

Breaking Fashion Rules: Why White is RIGHT After Labor Day!

As summer winds down and Labor Day approaches, we must sadly wave goodbye to a few wonderful “warm weather” things–late sunsets, lazy days at the beach, flip flops, and the nostalgic sound of the ice cream truck circling the block four times a day. Thankfully, there is one thing (or color!) that doesn’t have to be rushed out the door–WHITE!

It’s been a longstanding fashion rule, be it inspired by old-fashioned etiquette or the practical temperature properties of the said color, that white should not be worn after Labor Day–no shoes, bags, dresses, linens–you name it! But there are so many ways to say YES to white once fall rolls around, and no, we don’t just mean “winter white!”

White jeans are a staple wardrobe piece and can be paired with a number of colors, (try deep purples, oranges, or hunter greens for fall hues and a drastic pop!) or pair that white dress with a soft, dark cardigan and great boots to give it new feel for cooler weather.

And by the way, just because it’s almost fall doesn’t mean you have to abandon bright colors either! Even on its own, there are so many ways to wear white through the fall and winter…take a look!

And what about that addendum to the rule–no open-toed shoes? We say forget it! Open-toed pumps, especially paired with bright tights and socks this season are on the rise! So wear that white, strut those pumps, and come see us at The Tailor Maid for expert fashion advice, along with expert alterations!!

And hey!–the Today Show agrees with us! Check out yesterday’s segment on adapting your summer wardrobe for fall, and wearing those whites after Labor Day!

Also, don’t forget about our new duplication service! We can make you a little white dress from your favorite black dress too!

So enjoy the rest of your summer dear readers, and we’ll see you soon at The Tailor Maid!

The Tailor Maid Makes Magic!

Imagine this: you’re shopping for a that specific dress/top/jacket/blouse you have in mind and you come across that almost perfect one….the perfect dress if the hem was four inches longer….the perfect blouse if it only had sleeves….it has happened to all of us. In this world of infinite choices, wouldn’t it be nice if we had more options for customizing our clothing as well?

The Tailor Maid is taking tailoring to the next level with so many more options to make your wardrobe not only fit you perfectly, but give you more ways to amend your differences with your “almost perfect” pieces! Instead of putting that close-but-not-quite garment back on the rack, bring it to us and let us perform some fabric magic!

For this project, our client loved this bright pink top but wasn’t quite feeling the sleeve length–but she loved it so much that she purchased two, and we remade the sleeves to fit her desired length!

Before...sleeves too short!

By using the fabric from the second top, we were able to construct new sleeves to perfection!

After....just right!

Garment “problems” don’t have to be deal breakers: go from sleeveless to sleeves with ease. Go from “too short” to “totally appropriate” by adding a sheer over-layer for a longer look!  Mix and match colors and custom fabric choices to make your clothing truly unique!

Shell to sleeves? Add some sheer!

There are endless ideas and possibilities to customize and change your garments…come in to The Tailor Maid today and consult with one of our expert fitters to get started!

If Clothing Could Talk–the Diary of a Restyled Jacket.

We all know that old saying, “if walls could talk.”  We’d all love to know what kind of stories walls would share with us. But wouldn’t it be even better if clothing could talk? They could tell us about that time they traveled to Europe, about the time they got lost in that suitcase and ended up in China; or about that fabulous dinner party last year, and how that mustard stain really got there!

Our clothing can tell the stories of our lives.  And now, one jacket is going to have a new story of its own!

One of our clients recently brought to us one of her favorite suits that was in need of some tender love and care. The suit was expensive and special, though a little old and dated. She turned to The Tailor Maid for our expert experience in garment restyling!

Before:

The jacket needed to be shortened in length, which was not without its challenges. This required getting a little creative–the zippered panel would need to be removed in order to achieve a shorter length for a more updated look.

Once the zipper panel was removed,  the jacket could easily be shortened to a more updated look.

We also closed the back center pleat and removed a randomly placed button. The result is a much cleaner look.

Finally, the long sleeve placket with all those buttons was shortened to a stylish length, and the buttons were “stacked,” as is the style today.

Take a look at the results!

The suit pants also got a bit of love: we removed the waistband on the pants to give her a more modern style, and also to give her bit more room!

The result of the outfit restyle is night and day, and now this suit has been saved from retirement in the back of a closet, and  is now ready to start making more memories and stories!

The Tailor Maid specializes in garment restyling in all shapes and forms. We love putting our skills and creativity to work to give your wardrobe new life! Come and see us today and let us extend the long and happy lives of your favorite garments!
